From the same folks who brought you that horribly misogynist Grass Widow review comes a horribly misogynist and homophobic Hope For Agoldensummer review!
If you’re like “Hope for a golden whatnow?” I totally understand! They are a tiny little band from Athens, Ga. They are not well known, not even as well known as Grass Widow, who I don’t think are actually all that well known at all. Not that anyone really deserves to have this kind of crap written about them, but I guess at a certain level of “fame” it begins to make more sense, or at least seem like less of an absolutely cheap shot/low blow/your cliche of choice to express how just ridiculous it is for any media outlet of any size or scope to spend any time shitting on them, even when that media outlet’s primary function of existence seems to be to shit upon various things and take deep, presumably sexual, pleasure from it.
Also, yes: this band also has a really kind of cringe-ily spelled name—I admit that, and I’m a fan, so I totally get it if you’re like “ugh what is this mess.”
But. I would recommend that you find some way to listen to them, especially if you enjoy rustic, kinda woozy, simply-produced, well-hewn little songs, sung by two sisters with amazing interlocking voices and very wise hearts and very solid senses of humor (one of whom is actually a doula! I have no idea if either are lesbians because I’ve never thought about it once before because WHO CARES).
The band’s new album, Life Inside the Body, is on Rdio, and it’s entirely lovely, though you can probably skip “Corn Maze.” Their previous album, Ariadne Thread, is my favorite, and it’s not on streaming anywhere I can find but you can buy it with money here.
I may have time to think and write about the album more later, who knows. For now this is my corrective tribute to a band that’s close to my heart. I’ve been meaning to mention all this anyway so I guess thank you, Vice, for giving me a nudge. (Also, y’all can eat shit. But that’s what you want, isn’t it?)
