Some Reasons Why This Woman Did Not Fill Out A Pitchfork People’s List

  • I generally dislike ranking things but especially music for some reason
  • I got overwhelmed trying to process the fact that 1996-2011 basically comprises my entire music-listening life and trying to reconcile the very important albums of my adolescence with my taste as it stands now and wondering what was should bear more weight and what “liking” even means and what “music” even means and “life,” etc
  • I thought imposing some rules might be helpful, like Only One Album Per Artist, or Only What Comes To Mind Without Looking At iPod Or Mentally Rifling Through Old CD Collection, or Ranking Albums In Order Of How Many Hours I’ve Spent Listening To Each, but then realized not everyone would be making theirs based on those same rules, so the rules would then be kind of pointless, and also, RULES
  • I realized one of the major reasons I was considering filling one out at all was because I felt like some people out there wanted to see what my albums would be and I kind of wanted that attention and validation but didn’t know if forcing myself to complete a task I wasn’t personally fundamentally interested in for its own sake would be worth it or if it would just kind of be tedious and soul-crushing
  • Although another reason I thought about filling one out at all might have been that I wanted to see what it would be like to put Hanson’s Middle of Nowhere at number one, which, depending on whatever criteria I might’ve decided to hold myself to, really might have been the most honest choice
  • Mostly I just kind of forgot, then was going out of town, then was out of town, then came back and whatever
  • But yeah, sometimes dudes can be dicks about music
  • Seriously though, when was the last time you listened to “MMMBop”?
