I took this picture about one year and one week ago today, when I was working at a candy store for a few months after finding myself suddenly without a job in August. I don’t know why I never posted it, but figured today would be a fitting occasion, as I’ve now commemorated the whole weird experience—mostly in terms of my love for Darlene Love’s “Marshmallow World”—in a post for the Paris Review blog. (It’s 64 degrees and raining right now so I am yearning hardcore for last year’s amazing perfect Christmas weather but not for all the candy-slinging that preceded it.)
Finally someone has effectively summarized my highly complex feelings about this wonder of holiday cinema. (I have never felt like my relationship with Joe was in more of a crisis than the time I made him watch this, several Christmases ago, and at the end he was totally dead-eyed and struggling to maintain the will to live and I was all “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, it was worse than I remembered” but also at the same time I was like “OMG no that was the best, totally the best.”)

FYI, this happened probably because, after years of vague pining, I finally found bought a vastly overpriced used copy of Emmet Otter on DVD last week. Thank-you gifts are appreciated, of course, and will ideally take the form of real live talking/singing/musicking otters. No scarves and hats needed, I have some laid away for them already.

So, in Mt. Juliet, TN, there is a company called Rice’s Country Hams. They have stuff other than ham, basically just various other formats of pig, like really amazing sausages and bacon. Their business is a little odd, they’re only open a few months of the year, around Christmastime, and the rest of the year they just spend actually making those pig products- curing, smoking, salting, or whatever magical thing it is that they do to them. I am not kidding when I say that this is hands down the best ham, bacon, and sausage I’ve ever eaten. We had some of it on Christmas morning, when I turned to my mother, mouth full, and demanded to know whether or not I was actually eating unicorn meat.
This is all true. Stuff from Rice’s is so incredibly delicious, and Sarah was so incredibly astounded by its deliciousness on Christmas morning. She really honestly said, “Is this unicorn meat?” I think there may have been a tear in her eye.

Just realized that my most recent favorite Christmas song isn’t lyrically about Christmas or holidaytimes at all and in fact is super-relevant for a snow day! Which we are having again today! And will probably be having until Saturday! Hell, I might’ve reverted back to “Jingle Bells” by then, there’s really no telling.

View from my bedroom at my parents’ house about ten minutes ago—there’s more now, actually, because it’s really really coming down. First legit White Christmas of my whole life, for real. Sorry Chattanooga’s hogging all the snow, Atlanta friends! Now, to consume disgusting amounts of cheese grits and many various forms of pork.
